Jesus went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.
This is the first mention of the euangelia, the good news or gospel, in Matthew.
In Western Christianity, the Good News is generally understood as personal salvation, God’s forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life. While there is some truth to this, there is broader meaning found in the gospels.
Jesus proclaims the good news as he cures every disease and sickness among the people.
Good news is also an act of liberation, setting people free from the physical and emotional bondage of what ails them. Likewise, it is a liberation from the social and spiritual bondage that results from alienation from community.
The Good News is the liberation of those who suffer or are oppressed, and the restoration of people to wholeness and community.
For me, embodying Good News means reaching beyond my privilege and assisting in someone’s liberation.
How might you imagine yourself embodying Good News with someone else today?
