Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes to silence the enemy and the avenger.
How many times have I heard people say “out of the mouths of babes…” without knowing this is its source!
These days, we say that phrase to mean “truth can sometimes only be spoken by folks too immature or innocent to have learned not to lie”, but that’s not quite the sentiment of the psalm from which it comes.
Rather, the psalmist is making a claim about humanity’s superpowers: that through being made in God’s image, the speech of mere mortals - even our tiny babies - is powerful enough to protect all of Creation from evil.
To conjure a wall that the ocean of enemies breaks against and does not crush. To shout them down.
When have you found yourself hesitating to speak up about an injustice simply because you believe you're too young? Too junior on the team? Not knowledgeable enough?
How does it change things to know that God gifted you with the power to protect Creation with a word?
As you imagine the day ahead, how do you want to use your voice and speak up when you would normally remain quiet?
