Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
I’m always struck by the decisiveness of the first disciples' encounter with Jesus.
They heard his invitation and immediately left their family, livelihood, and community behind.
Generally, I operate with slow, careful discernment. I fear rushing to decisions or making decisions by impulse; I must really test and be sure about where God is leading me.
The disciples offer a counter-intuitive alternative. They know in their gut, their deep inner wisdom, what is true and good, as the Son of God is plain as day before them.
Perhaps sometimes, it is good to trust our gut and act quickly, for the direction of God’s loving presence may not always require careful discernment or hand-wringing.
Perhaps Jesus wants to form the impulse of our spirit to move decisively in favor of compassion, peace, and justice.
How can you listen to your gut today and follow the way of Jesus?
