In fact, this is love for God: to keep God’s commands. And God’s commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
When sung from the perspective of this passage, the song, “We Shall Overcome” could easily be sung, “We Have Overcome”.
The journey of faith is informed by an already realized future that tells us that the unfailing love of God has already overcome the world.
In the person of Jesus, we have proof positive that our greatest fears do not define us, but rather, the perfect love that casts out fear (1 John 4:18).
How would you live differently if you knew for certain that your future is secured in love? Once you see it, commit to living that way.
That is the Gospel invitation for each of us. And this is the command, “Love as you have been loved.” In this way, we can say with Jesus, our yoke is easy and our burden is light (Matthew 11:30).
How might you make a small peace with the command to love today? What might that look like in your life today?
