"When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately."
I majored in International Relations, so I try to keep up with the news. And, when I see the news of new wars, potential nuclear threats, or about insurrections in our own country, I panic.
I panic because I feel that evil is winning and that the moral arc of the universe is bending towards injustice and violence.
My dog’s trainer once told me that “things are going to get much worse before they get really good.”
Jesus, in a way, is saying something similar to the community. He is saying: “you’ll see the worst of humanity before you see the best.” And I cling to this promise, even as I doomscroll.
It’s the only way for me to keep going.
Hope is the antidote to fear and panic. We all experience fear throughout our days. Some big and some small.
What do you want to commit to doing differently today when you experience fear or panic? What small step do you want to take to interrupt its influence?
